No Highland 24-Hour Release Feed
Neither the Highland County Sheriff's Office nor Middle River Regional Jail publishes a verified public list of people released during the prior day. The Highland County Lockup has no confirmed public roster at all. MRRJ supplies an official JailTracker page, but that page is configured to show current offenders. It has no public released tab, no last-24-hours filter, and no published post-release visibility period. Calling it a release list would misstate what the system does.
A same-day release must instead be tied to one booking episode. Start with the booked name, date of birth or another lawful identifier, Highland court case number, booking date, and MRRJ commitment number when known. A release transaction can then distinguish bond, recognizance, time served, a court order, or a transfer. Name alone is not safe because two people can share it.
The Highland County Lockup and MRRJ also create different records. A person can be arrested and held briefly in Monterey, then either leave under lawful authority or be transported to the regional jail. In the first path, the Sheriff may hold the decisive direct-release record. In the second, the transport record explains why the person left local holding, but it does not show freedom. MRRJ becomes the source for the later custody event. Asking where the person went is therefore as important as asking when a name vanished.
Check Highland Same-Day Releases
The best same-day process checks the live custody signal first and then finds the record that explains the change. It also keeps Highland County Lockup records separate from MRRJ records. The Sheriff may hold the arrest, local booking, direct-release, or transport record. MRRJ is the custodian of a confinement and release transaction created at the regional jail.
- Open the official MRRJ Public Roster. Record the time of the check. A match means the person is listed in current custody at that moment.
- Search the exact person through Virginia VINE on VINELink. Compare the facility and record details before relying on a custody status.
- Review Virginia Online Case Information for a bond, disposition, sentencing, or later order that may explain the legal basis for release.
- Contact MRRJ for current custody direction. For a durable result, ask for the existing release transaction, including release date, time, type, and destination if maintained and releasable.
- Ask the Highland County Sheriff's Office whether the person was released from the lockup or transported to another custodian.

Highland 24-Hour Record Fields
Because no public Highland County 24-hour feed exists, the useful fields below belong in a requested existing release log or named release record. They must not be confused with fields on the current roster. Ask the custodian for data it already keeps rather than asking staff to prepare a new explanation.

The public MRRJ roster may show a photograph, name, intake date, charges, bond information, facility data, and a scheduled release date on a current booking. Those are live-custody fields. A scheduled date is prospective, while a completed release timestamp records an event that already occurred.
Request a Highland Release Log
A narrow Virginia Freedom of Information Act request is the direct substitute for the missing feed. Send it to the office that created the record. The MRRJ FOIA route applies to MRRJ bookings and releases. The Highland Sheriff is the better contact for a direct release from the lockup or for a transport record. Virginia FOIA generally requires an initial response within five working days, but that is a response framework, not a promise of delivery within five days.
Give exact start and end times. Ask for the existing release log or list of people released from MRRJ during that interval, limited to Highland County commitments if an existing field permits the filter. Request the release timestamp and type or authority. If MRRJ cannot filter by county, ask what existing jurisdiction or committing-agency field identifies a Highland case. For one person, provide the booking number, case number, and approximate admission date.
Request an electronic copy and an estimate before costs exceed a limit you choose. Allow redaction of exempt material. The office need not create a new report or answer research questions, so wording the request around existing fields improves the chance of a clear response.

Highland Release or Transfer
“No longer at MRRJ” and “released to the community” are different findings. A person may leave MRRJ for VADOC, another jail, a federal authority, or immigration custody. A community release may follow bond, recognizance, dismissal with a release order, completion of a local sentence, or another lawful authority. The release record should state which occurred.

If a state transfer is plausible, use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator after allowing for intake lag. A state locator's estimated release date is not proof that someone has left custody. Federal and immigration matters require the matching federal system.
Read Highland Roster Results Carefully
The official MRRJ roster interface shows why the current search cannot answer who left custody today.
The screen is useful for a current MRRJ check, but it offers no public released, 24-hour, or 72-hour tab. Save the time checked and move to VINE, the court record, or a release-record request when a person no longer appears.
Why Highland Releases Cross Systems
Highland County has no verified county-branded jail roster. Some documented Highland detainees are housed at MRRJ in Staunton, while the Highland County Sheriff's Office remains the key placement contact for local arrests and short-term holding. That split is the defining local issue behind a same-day release check.
The official MRRJ site identifies the regional jail and links its live roster. Yet absence from that roster cannot show whether the person walked out, went back to the Highland lockup, entered another jail, or transferred to VADOC. The Sheriff can identify a local direct release or transport path. MRRJ can document its own release or transfer transaction.
This also explains why no fixed public update schedule or public retention promise should be claimed. Backend vendor metadata is not the same as a visible archive or an official retention policy. The approved record series may also differ among a booking log, photograph, incident file, court case, and transport record.
For a same-day question, preserve the sequence of events. Note when the person last appeared on the roster, when the court entered any release-related order, when VINE reported a change, and when the custodian confirmed the transaction. These times may not match. The gap does not by itself show an error because each system receives and posts different data. If two sources conflict, request the existing booking and release record instead of choosing the faster update. That record can connect the booking identifier, release authority, completed timestamp, and destination in one agency file.
A useful answer also names its scope. State that the check concerned MRRJ, the Highland lockup, or both, and state the interval reviewed. This avoids turning one facility's result into a claim about every Highland County custody path. It also lets the records officer see exactly which existing event and time span must be located.
